A long-established family-run pet shop

Heather's Place4Pets has grown from a small family venture run by the 2 Mellor brothers over 70 years ago into a trusted local pet shop, welcoming generations of pet owners through our doors.

Heather started as a trainee whilst still at school, attended Askham Bryan college, leaving with top, Level 3 qualifications. She stayed with the shop, eventually taking over ownership in 2018 with her father's backing. She took over the shop with a simple aim: to give local people honest advice, healthy animals and good-quality pet supplies without the hard sell. Over the years we have expanded our ranges, introduced new services and modernised how we work, but we remain proudly family-run and firmly rooted in the community.

Many of our customers have been with us for years – coming back when their children get their first hamster, or when it is time to add another  rabbit to the family. That continuity means we get to know you and your pets, so we can recommend what is genuinely right for your home, your budget and your animals.

Meet the team behind the counter
Our values: pets first, always

Everything we do at Heather's Place4Pets starts with animal welfare. We will never recommend a pet, product or setup that we do not believe is right for the animal or the owner.

We take time to understand your home, your experience level and your budget so we can guide you towards responsible choices – whether that is helping you decide between species, advising on the right cage size or suggesting a gradual change of diet for sensitive stomachs.

Our approach to animal welfare and ethical sourcing includes:

  • Carefully vetting our animal suppliers and preferring small, reputable breeders where possible.
  • Housing animals in appropriate, clean enclosures with access to the right food, enrichment and veterinary care when needed.
  • Refusing impulse sales – we will ask questions and may suggest you take time to think if we do not feel a pet is suitable.
  • Spending time with new owners at the counter to go through diet, handling, cage cleaning and what to expect in the first few weeks.
  • Stocking feeds, treats and bedding we would use for our own animals, favouring quality and value over flashy packaging.
  • Providing honest aftercare support – if something is not working, we will help you troubleshoot and adjust.

Our goal is that every animal leaving the shop goes to a prepared home, with owners who feel confident and supported.

Part of the local community

Heather's Place4Pets has always been more than just a place to buy food and bedding – we are part of everyday life for many local families.

We know our regulars by name, keep track of their pets' favourites and do our best to be flexible when someone needs a little extra help, whether that is carrying heavy bags to the car or arranging a quick same-day delivery.

Over the years we have:

  • Supported local rescues and charities with donation baskets, discounted supplies and occasional fundraising events.
  • Given talks and Q&A sessions for schools and community groups about responsible pet care.
  • Helped families rehome pets responsibly when circumstances change, putting welfare first.
  • Provided a friendly, safe place for nervous new owners to come back with questions after they have brought an animal home.

Choosing a local, independent pet shop helps keep that support in the community – and we are very grateful for every customer who chooses to shop with us.

Helpful information before you visit

Do you help first-time owners choose the right pet?
Yes. We will ask about your home, time, budget and experience, then talk you through suitable options. If we do not think a particular animal is right for you, we will explain why and suggest alternatives.

What should I bring when collecting a new pet?
For small animals, we recommend a secure carrier with bedding inside. For fish and reptiles we will provide appropriate containers for the journey, but please make sure you can take them straight home and set them up without long stops on the way.

Can I return an animal if it is not working out?
If you are struggling, please contact us as soon as possible. We will talk through what is happening and, where needed, help with rehoming in a way that puts the animal's welfare first. We cannot promise to refund in every situation, but we will always try to help.

Do you offer advice after I have taken a pet home?
Absolutely. You are welcome to ring the shop, pop in with questions or email us for support. We would much rather you ask than worry at home.

Can you set me up with everything I need on the day?
Yes. For most species we can put together a starter bundle with housing, bedding, food and basic accessories, and we will explain how to use everything before you leave.
